Have you tried kerning? the I leaves extra space after it...
@77 , thanks, I've done the I and redone the Aa, V, B, Kk and Q. Hard to get it right as the general letter width just didn't work. I think I've got the visual effect right now (??) while maintaining some irregularity in spacing.
@ zephram, thank you :) that was what I had in mind (this design was inspired by a 1970s film although the actors were holding up placards while skating in the street)
