‘Scrap Paper’ is a bold, display typeface inspired by the theme of compression. The letterforms were created from drawings of a distorted alphabet, formed by screwing up each letter printed onto a piece of paper, hence the name. The scrunched up type make for a ‘grunge’ feel, perfect for a large format, yet still visible when used at a smaller size.

"Blimey!" is a typeface inspired by the 1970s Punk movement- paying notice to the political, economical and social issues of the time and how they affected what we commonly refer to as the “Punk Aesthetic”. Ransom note lettering, stencils, silkscreen printing and the appropriation of current cultural imagery aided the movement to deliver its important message of rebellion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Starting off with the theme "Dangerous", my focus for this project drifted to the definitions of both “rebellion” and “anarchy”. This naturally led me to the Punk movement and how it’s graphic style has been adopted into contemporary design practice. These graphics were often rough, raw, weathered and distressed- all of which I’ve tried to incorporate into my own type’s design. Ironically, the fact that this “style” is being used for commercial gain goes against the very foundations of Punk itself. This realisation spurred on the font’s name Blimey!, an ironic expression that is perhaps the furthest away from punk itself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This typeface would be best utilised in consideration to posters, flyers and possibly book covers (providing the content matches the attitude of the font). This font was inspired by the works of Christophe Szpajdel (Lord of the Logos, 2010, Die Gestalten Verlag), as well as by the film trilogy and the following game titles (e.g. Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, 2014) based on Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. Given the game theme, and the 48 bricks vertical limit, I thought more or less around pixel art, or pixel fonts. This is my endeavour to make a spiky blackletter in Szpajdel's black metal style that evokes the terror of Mordor at pixel level. This font has been extensively tested for best kerning, yet some issues might have remained unresolved.

Based on disintegration, this font represents many forms of decay. It also appears like tea-stains on paper, giving it a very worn look. Despite this, the font is structured around helvetica and the letterforms remain recognisable and readable. The font is designed to be decorative and to be use selectively, for bold and attention grabbing headers, and not for large pieces of text. Think poster for your local rubbish tip! (or of a similar vibe).

More retro than any other typewriter font. This one has some imperfections to imitate a real typewriter.

This san serif, textured, bold font is inspired by the old cast iron type on train carts. When I discovered the old train carts down at the 'Bristol Harbour Railway' I was fascinated by these incredible forms. To create the structure of these characters I worked from one of the rubbings I took of a particularly nice iron plate and then scanned it into the computer to replicate the letters which where missing. I then printed this on to graph paper and transferred the bricks one by one to try and get the most accurate representation as possible.

This is the second of two typefaces that I have created in response to a brief set in my first term studying Graphic Design at UWE Bristol. My chosen theme for the six week project was decay. I decided to create two fonts, an original and a decayed version. I took inspiration from photos I took of graffiti and tagging around Bristol. For this specific font I was inspired by the way graffiti changes and breaks down over time. 'Decayed Spray' is my interpretation of the spray painted letter forms that crowd the walls of this city... after weather and humans have done their thing for a fair few years. www.jenniferlouisejohnson.tumblr.com

An improvement of the former (Headless/Tangle, now called Tangled Hairline); This version is bolder and simpler with more striking 'chaos motion' lines. This version is perhaps more decorative looking than the original and definitely more ordered in the sense of the letterforms to enable usability.

This typeface has been created based on the theme 'Vibration'. I tried out a wide range of experimentation when it came to producing hand rendered work, as I felt I needed to work out what would best capture the general sense of the word. I tried using inks on elastic bands, attaching pens to a playstation controller and drawing, photographing food colouring over a speaker; all sorts. Finally, I decided I needed something which really reflected the word clearly. I looked at the white noise and the trails that you get on the television, and applied this feel to a sans serif font I had made based on Georgia (minus the Serifs) One of the most time comsuming things I've ever done, hope its been worth it. Any comments welcome.
